Joy: From the Ground Up

Won’t Back Down June 22, 2013

I made at least 76 different people smile today. I’m not certain of the exact number but I don’t need to know that to know how happy this makes me. Today mom took me to Fido Fest, a local celebration of all things canine. And it was fabulous. There were hundreds (maybe even thousands) of dogs of so many different shapes, sizes and breeds. It was a sight to be seen.

So we seized the day and shared my joy from the ground up with whomever would take it. Literally. This morning mom printed off 150 fliers with my silly face on it promoting the blog. We got to the festival, found a good spot, and I stood proudly by her side as we handed out the fliers. I thought it would be fun but that optimism faded away a lot sooner than I could have imagined.

The first person who walked by said no thank you. The second person didn’t say anything. The third just waved her free hand at us while her Westie (who was wearing a doggie visor) glanced at me apologetically from her perch in what appeared to be a doggie stroller. I didn’t understand. Why would anyone say no thank you to a daily dose of joy? Why would anyone ignore a smile? Why would you wave away a happy moment in your day?

That’s when I felt my proverbial foot start to tap to the beat of a familiar anthem of anyone who has been told “no one too many times. “Well I know what’s right, I got just one life in a world that keeps on pushin’ me around but I’ll stand my ground and I won’t back down.” Thank you, Tom Petty, for reminding me of my true purpose.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that things turned around in that moment. People started taking the fliers, reading them as they walked away, and turning around to smile at mom and I after taking a couple steps. They turned back around and smiled. At least 76 different people turned around and smiled. Thanks (in part) to the various kinds of distractions that made up my surroundings, I lost count after that.

Oh Wiley, I do hope you get lots of new friends here in Blogdom because of those fliers. Remember a week or so ago when you met your “twin”? His Mom came to visit that night. I don’t think my day would be complete with out a dose of Wiley’s Wisdom xx

    • Dear Lyn,
I can’t be certain of the success (or failure) of the fliers, but I do know one thing for sure. I sure do care about the pals I have out here in the blogosphere….pals like you. 😉 Take care, dear friend!

  3. Oh Wiley, it would have been so much fun to be at Fido Fest with you promoting our blogs together! Glad you had so much fun! Woooooowooooooo, Ku

  4. Wow! That looks like a very JOYful event!! Those folks who waved you off didn’t know what they were missing! But the power of Joyful thinking won through!

  5. What a great way to promote your blog! That was the perfect place to hand out flyers AND spread some of your special joy! The last picture proves how exhausting it is to be adorable! xo

    Love and licks,

  6. You got 76 smiles – and every smile counts a lot. Great job, Wiley.

  7. Well done. Looks like you had more success than I did at my dog day. However, I do tend to find that I have more success in non dog related environments, where Litchi suddenly becomes the center of attention. That’s the thing though. You just can’t give up based on “no’s”. You have to keep plowing forward. Well done to you. Did you pick up a whole lot more followers?

    • That is a really good tip, especially since I LOVE being the center of attention!!!! Thank you!!! I will indeed continue plowing forward, even if my efforts yesterday only brought in one or two new followers. They don’t know what they’re missing out here in the fabulous blogosphere!

I am too far away but I really wish I was there. I would definitely been the first to take a leaflet, bravo Wiley’s mom, what a great idea. Wiley is always on my list of blogs to read every day. I think even my felines have a peek now and again, but being felines that would never admit it.

I need to get a house so that I can have cute goggy again! You make me miss it so much..(And I guess that is a good thing).

    • Happy doggies were everywhere! Though I’m sorry I evoke anything but happy thoughts for you….I’m certain the right dog will come along at the right time when all is supposed to happen. These things have a way of working out. 🙂
