Joy: From the Ground Up

Penny For Your Thoughts August 31, 2013

I did the unthinkable today. I made friends with a feline. And I’ve got to be honest. I don’t understand what all the fuss is about.

Her name is Penny and she frequents my front doorstep, so I assumed she was homeless. She doesn’t wear a collar, so I assumed she wasn’t loved by a person. She’s one of the skinnier felines I’ve come across, so I assumed she doesn’t eat very frequently.

On Friendship

I assumed wrong. I learned today she has a forever home down the street where she is very well-loved by an older lady named Rose. Much like us canines think of our people, Penny considers Rose her best friend. So it hasn’t been easy for Penny to see her person struggling with health issues more frequently lately. She apparently sleeps a lot during the day (which is saying something coming from a cat), so she encourages Penny to seek adventure outside the confines of the house. She trusts that Penny will come home for her specially prepared meals (Penny has digestion issues), and for the love they share.

Penny looked especially downtrodden on my doorstep today, so I successfully pestered mom enough to take me outside to talk to her. It was the first time we’d spoken and I can honestly say I hope it’s not the last. Everything about her surprised me, and she seemed surprised to feel the same way about me.

She said from her perspective I always looked aloof, guarded, and the slightest bit snooty from my perch in the window. Like you think your poop doesn’t stink, she said. We laughed together at that, since we both know poop does indeed stink.

Amidst our laughter, I realized how unfair we had been to each other all this time. We both had these inaccurate pictures of each other’s personality painted in our heads. She had bad experiences with dogs, and I had bad experiences with cats. But in this (albeit strange) situation, we were able to move past those preconceived notions and (gasp!) actually like each other. It didn’t take me long to come to the conclusion that stereotypes are definitely overrated. Other people should not be allowed to determine who you can and cannot befriend. Moreover, others should not determine what should and should not bring you joy.

“Allow yourself to trust joy and embrace it,” suggested my favorite transcendental thinker Ralph Waldo Emerson. “You will find you dance with everything.”

Today I found joy in the most unusual place. I found it in Penny. She makes it her purpose in life to bring joy (from the ground up) to her dearest person named Rose. So I don’t particularly care if she’s a cat and the world says we can’t be friends. Penny is rich with joy, which makes her pretty priceless in my book.

Wiles, you are so so sweet to make friends with Penny!!!! Rose and Penny sound like wonderful neighbors!!!! Hugs

    • Hey Trev,
There is this think I hear people say a lot in response to the infamous “how are you?” I’m good, great, swell…these are all common responses. If a person ever asked me that question I know what I would say: I’m blessed. I’m blessed to have friends like you and Penny and Rose. πŸ™‚
      Lots of love,
      Wiles

  2. Ah sounds like you guys may be watching out for Penny more often now πŸ™‚

  3. I never thought I’d like a cat either, W. My kittie blog friends taught me that cats can be cool. I’m still a little afraid of the cats that hide under cars and scare me when I go by, but I have learned to judge each cat for who it is. Some are awesome. Some want to kill me. Give Penny a lick for me!

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

    • Dear Cupcake,
Just as you continuously teach me your great wisdom, I’ve experienced the same from my kittie blog friends. Heck, my kittie blog friends are a main reason I gave Penny a chance yesterday. πŸ™‚ I will send Penny your love.
      πŸ™‚ Wiles

My cats and dogs are no speciests and like each others a lot. So we don’t know why there would be a problem. I mean okay I know cats who don’t like dogs. But speciesism is not a virtue. It’s very nice of Penny to bring joy to her person. πŸ™‚

  5. I love all my kittie-friends from Blogville too. But I’m not sure if I would love the kitties I meet on the street :o)
But I think to meet a kitty like Penny is like to find a gold coin :o)

    • I feel the same way, dear brother. I love all my kittie blog friends and am skeptical of those I encounter in the “real world.” But Penny surprised me, so who knows what else is out there? πŸ™‚

What can I say to this? My chief feline Nera finds this strange. She once had a hissy conversation with a canine and then she ran, chased by an excited canine. I did try to explain that canines are like felines, they need time to get used to the situation. Nera found no, the only thing canines and felines have in common is that they do not like each other. Any chance of sending Nera to Wisconsin to have the situation explained? Wiley you are unique.

    • I do know this thought exists in cats and dogs alike – in some minds that is the only thing they have in common – their dislike for each other. I do disagree, though I also generally respect the feelings of others. I’m bummed Nera and I can’t be friends in her heart, but we are friends in my book. I’d love having Nera here. πŸ™‚

  7. I’m so glad you’ve made the pawesome discovery that we felines are the best! Hehe! =^.^=

Wyles – you are World Ambassador Quality! I am so glad you gave Penny a chance and vice-versa. I have a recent friend and we found out the same as you and Penny – so nice to break free of bias and exchange views in ways that make each other laugh. In fact, Elby That Cat and Ella, the Greyhound are excellent companions now. Yesterday, Ella and I were out visiting the greyhound pack and when I mentioned it was time to go home and see Elby, Ella rolled over in delight, jumped to her feet and was ready to go home to be the only dog instead of one of four AND to see Elby. They greeted each other with pleasure and there was some curious conversations they would not let me hear….

    • Dear HuntMode,
I spent some time yesterday with my greyhound cousin named Scottie and my thoughts drifted to Claire. Dear Scottie is in bad health and I fear this may have been our last time together. But rather than be sad, I’m happy to have known him and known Claire through you. Moreover, I’m so glad you have Ella and that she brings such joy to your heart. Oh, and don’t take it personally – us animals have secret conversations all the time – it’s nothing personal. πŸ™‚
      Lots of love,
      Wyles

      • huntmode Says:

Ah, Wyles, my heart to you and your greyhound cousin, Scottie and the family ties that bind. I have found it is okay and a form of balance to share both the joy of knowing someone and the sadness at a temporary final parting – we honor ourselves and them in our hearts, memories and dreams. There is also a peace that comes when the pain is done and you know it – that your friend and cousin are free again. Give yourselves lots of extra loving kisses and hugs from us, your HuntMode family. Love HuntMode, Elby and Ella.

      • Dear friend,
I figured this would resonate with you, but that you would also have some words of wisdom to share with me. Thank you for your extra thoughts, love, and kisses. They will not go to waste.
All my best to you, Elby and Ella,
        Wyles

Oh Wylie, what a great you have been given, to open you heart t o another and see beyond the fur. And even more wonderful is that you shared your heart with us about it. I am so sorry about Scottie. Goodbyes can be so hard. But hey are not forever, truly. You will see you dear Scottie again. When one day, he sees you heading over the Rainbow Bridge, he is going to be so happy. I imagine he will c ome running and barking a nd be so very glad to see and you will both feel like running and playing. You’ll miss him but one day, joy again!

Cally doesn’t give a fig about the so-called rules about canines and felines not being friends. She adores her big brother Napoleon, (who is a 10kg Oriental cat compared to her slight 5kg Cavoodle body). They share a basket and groom one another and play tag up and down the hallway. Mind you, it wasn’t always that way πŸ˜€ http://theencouragingscribe.wordpress.com/2012/07/27/just-sos-you-remember-im-the-boss/
