Joy: From the Ground Up

To Keep Me Warm December 24, 2013

It was 2 a.m. when it occurred to me. This whole mom being nine months pregnant thing is disrupting my sleep schedule almost as much as it is for her and dad. I’m up every time she’s up (which is more and more frequent lately). Certainly she can’t go wherever she’s going alone. Someone has to watch over her to make sure she’s safe wandering the house in the dark.

Loving the Treats! So I follow her wherever she wanders off to, regardless of the time and frequency. Today during our 2 a.m. rendezvous I was overcome with two very impactful pieces of information. First, that it is Christmas Eve. Day one of two of mom’s most favorite days of year. And second, it is freezing outside. Literally. It was 2 degrees at 2 a.m. in our part of the world today. Even when you’re used to it as us Wisconsinites are, weather this brisk still has a way of taking your breath away.

Showing Some LoveBut then again, so does this emotion that seems to overwhelm all members of my forever family at this special time called Christmas. Love. From the ground up, it is all around this time of year. I know because I show it in my extra cuddles. And my doggie kisses. And my tail wags. I share it in every way I know how. And it inevitably comes back to me in droves. It seems to be another one of those emotions that comes alive in its contagiousness.

And it’s not really something we even think about. Real love does. It radiates from us in everything we do, and in doing so creates a distinctive warmth that is sure to spread to the next person ready to receive its glow. Real love is. It becomes us to the point where we aren’t sure which came first – the love of the giver or the receiver.

It was 2 p.m. when things came full circle in my heart. I welcomed mom’s side of the family into my forever home for an afternoon and evening of joy and love. Sure, there were presents. And pretty ribbons. And treats. But none of that mattered as much as the love I felt in the room. At 9 degrees, it was still incredibly brisk outside. But that was outside. Inside it was warm, not just from the heat we are blessed to have but through the love in the air. Tonight I rest easy because (as Frank Sinatra croons in the age-old Christmas carol) I’ve got my love to keep me warm.Love Is

Merry Christmas everyone!

Love is the best – but it’s good you got treats too. They’re second best. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, Wyles! Enjoy the love, hugs, cuddles and 2:00 a.m. walks ~ this is your life, kiddo, for about six months to a year or so…. I am so happy for you and Mom and Dad. This is most definitely one of the best days of the year! Love and hugs from HuntMode, Ella & Elby

    • This is my life, as you said, and I don’t intend on wasting it in any way other than celebration of each day. I thought of that this season – we have so much to celebrate about each day…sometimes I wonder why we put such pressure/focus on this day called Christmas when every day is a blessing. I do know the reason for the season, but I suppose dad was right last Christmas when he told mom we “can’t put Christmas away.” It is always in our hearts.
      Lots of love,

  4. Merry Christmas Wiley, thank you for all the smiles 🙂

    • Love certainly made its way into your words in this special message, dear friends of Nikitaland! Thank you so very much for all the kind things you say and do. Did you all have a very Merry Christmas? I sure hope so!
      Lots of love,

      • Nikitaland Says:

Oh boy Wiley, we sure did have a great Christmas here! We got tons of toys with fabulous squeakers in them, lots of stuffies to play with too, and Daddy & Mommy both got so many nice things too! It was the best Christmas ever! What did you get for Christmas?

      • I’m so glad to hear about such a beautiful Christmas in Nikitaland! It sounds just as I would hope it would be. My people had a pretty budget-conscious celebration this year, limiting the number of presents exchanged. But I did get a pretty special new name tag for my collar, which is a relief since mine was so old the writing had gotten scratched off. I’d hate to think what could have happened had I wandered too far from my forever home and whoever found me couldn’t bring me back!

      • Nikitaland Says:

Ooooh, that is such a wonderful nice present to you! See, your forever parents want to keep you around for good! They want to keep you safe! If you came over, we would share our toys with you and even chase you around a little too! That would be a fun play date! How is your Mommy doing?

      • Oh goodness, a play date would be fun indeed! I have to admit – part of the reason I didn’t get new toys is I cherish my existing ones so much. I have a whole basket full of characters I hold very dear to my heart. 🙂 Mom is all right…the doctors keep saying “any day now,” which is both promising and challenging. I can tell she’s really tired and struggles lately to help me with the daily blog…but everything’s ready and we’re staying optimistic around here! 🙂

      • Nikitaland Says:

Your Mom has been on my mind for awhile now and I send her joyful thoughts every day, hoping she gets them! Just think of all the “firsts” you will have with the new little bundle of joy – the first time you sniff them (& approve, of course), the first time you do something silly and make them laugh, the first time they chase you around the house – – oh so many firsts to cherish! A house of love & lots of poopie diapers too! (more new “smells” for you) Give Mommy a hug from me!

      • No worries, dear friends of Nikitaland. I catch all those happy thoughts and share them with mom. She’s been a bit blue lately since “it could be any day” got a lot less exciting after two weeks of waiting. But those first might be closer than we think – another doctor appointment is on the horizon this Thursday, so we shall see! 🙂
        Lots of love,

      • Nikitaland Says:

        Keeping our fingers crossed! Hugs!

      • 🙂 Hugs were appreciated!!!
