Whoever said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks didn’t know what they were talking about. I’m five people years old and I learned a new trick today. Well, that’s not entirely true. But I thought about it. Does that count?
All kidding aside, my people talked tonight about teaching me to retrieve a specific toy based on its name. Flea. Mrs. Prickles. Mr. Prickles. Angry Bird. These are a few of the characters in question. What they don’t know is I definitely know who’s who amidst my toy clan. I just prefer to not play favorites.
But this whole trick misunderstanding is akin to something silly I heard my people say a while back. There’s no right time to have a baby, mom said. It doesn’t necessarily sound like a positive thing to say. Nor is it negative.
And, as I am in the habit of choosing optimism over pessimism, it got me to thinking about this idea of there being a “right” time to make a major life change. Like learning a new trick, regardless of your age. Or breaking a bad habit. Or starting a good one.
“Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go,” suggested American author and motivational speaker Nido Quebein, “they merely determine where you start.”
It doesn’t matter when you learn the new tricks, as long as you have an open mind. Because the “right” time is now.
I told my friends about you and your wonderful blog. I gave the link so they can also visit you! LOL
Yay!!! Pawing it forward is the best. Thank you thank you thank you!

Thanks for the pingback!!
It is impossible to say there is a right time for many things (except for a cup of coffee perhaps) which is a good thing. Some things we cannot control and they happen… they happen at the right time when they happen. God’s timing it is for me. If HE thinks it is the right time then it happens. Things happen for a reason as we say. As you say having an open mind is extremely helpful when things happen. You are such an amazing dog, Wiley 🙂
I believe wholeheartedly in your words, dear friend. God’s timing is THE timing. I think it’s when we try to make our own timing that things get…complicated. So instead I keep an open mind. It’s the only way to be. 🙂 Lots of love to you!!!
You nailed it, Wiles. You could totally do that toys-by-name trick. I am 7 and Mom taught me to sit up and beg a few weeks ago. I can balance like a champ. Who knew? And who knows?? Any day now, I might be fetching a ball! Anything is possible…..
Love and licks,
Oh goodness, Cupcake! You’re missing out! Fetch is the best! Take it from me, you’ll both enjoy that one. 🙂
Lots of love,
I learn new tricks easily ; Old Cissy she can learn but she is stubborn and figures she does not have to. Mom learned a lot since she adopted me I was the first baby she took to obedience training and she says she loved the experience. She only adopts she does not buy pets so when ol cissy leaves us she wants to adopt again and take the new one to obedience training also .. we all need to learn new tricks
That’s pretty cool that your mom chooses to adopt instead of buying her fur babies. That’s what I like to hear, as an adopted rescue myself. High paw to us and our big brains! 🙂
Lots of love to the family,
I don’t know much about the right time, but I agree with you the time is now :o)
You’re so wise, dear brother. 🙂
I agree, Wiley. You can teach an old dog new tricks. And NOW is the only time we have. 🙂
Thank you Linda! 🙂
but you’re definitely not an ‘old’ dog Wiley
I suppose you’re right. 😉
Wyles, I was reading today that God isn’t interested in right circumstances, just right responses. Clearly, you are a Champion!
Wow….that’s big time thinking dear Huntie…I have some work to do with that one. Thank you for sharing!
As to learning new tricks, treats are great incentives…. Point this out to Mom and Dad when they want you to choose between one of your toy clan…. 🙂
Sounds like a good idea, let us know how you get on!
Will do! 🙂

The right time is now!
Very nice information you have been shared here. Thanks for that!
Your today’s conclusions were impacting!!. You are right,… in my mind too, the right time “to learn” something new…is right now!!., learning is and “eternal present”. Thank you for this one, “Wiley wise”. “Huggins”.
