Joy: From the Ground Up

Dodging Bullets November 25, 2013

I’ve dodged my fair share of bullets in my five years of doggie life. Not literally (obviously) but figuratively. Emotionally. Mentally. Spiritually. I’ve been attacked in all of these ways and yet I have remained intact.

I made it safely out of a sticky situation in the road with some cars the day I got separated from my birth mom and brothers. I survived an attack by another dog at the dog park. My mom persevered through the struggle to adopt me (it wasn’t an easy process because I’d already been returned once before). These are all things I’ve lived through. I’d go as far as to call them my life’s biggest close calls.Dodging Bullets

But I’m not sure anything lived up to the moment I experienced today on the car trip to the groomer. Because today it wasn’t just my life in danger. It was my forever mom’s life. And the future little person’s life. And it was terrifying.

It was snowing – the first somewhat significant snowfall in Wisconsin this winter – and it was beautiful. I love everything about snow. I love the stillness it brings, and the method in which it is delivered. Except for today. Today it was danger personified. One minute we were safe. The next the car felt slippery and out of control. I thought for sure we were going to hit something.

My heart raced. My body shook. Time stood still. (Apparently it’s this way for people too). Then the moment passed. The car was back under control like nothing had happened. I didn’t stop shaking. My heart kept a steadily fast pace. But we were okay. We were safe. All three of us were safe.

I’ve had my fair share of what you could refer to as close calls. This one was different. Because it wasn’t about me. It was about my forever person and my future little person. I’ve got plans for us – big plans – and in that moment nothing was more important than that.

“It’s our challenges and obstacles that give us layers of depth and make us interesting,” suggested American actress and TV personality Ellen DeGeneres. ” Are they fun when they happen? No. But they are what make us unique.”

The snow taught me yet another beautiful lesson today. It’s one I’m sure I already knew, but I certainly welcome the reminder. My people are more important to me than myself. Their safety, their happiness, their joy comes before my own. I don’t care how many bullets I need to dodge to protect that truth.

Oh Wiles, I’m so glad all three of you are okay! Your Mom would have felt exactly the same as you, and no doubt your future little person would have felt something of your Mom’s fears too.

So glad you are ok, and because you love someone you care so much for them, for you they are moreimportant than yourself. You are all important, your whole family including you, so do take care, and tell your mum to be exta careful in the snow. HAve a calm and loving day!

    • Hello friend,
I will tell my mom to take care and slow down. I think she needs to slow down in every aspect of life as this little person’s arrival gets closer…. 😉
      Lots of love,
      Wiles

You know Wiles, my oldest son is 20 today, And I remember as if it was yesterday when he was born, you never forget something miraculous as this. And I can add it has been wonderful 20 years, yes with ups and downs but he turned out to be a wonderful loving young man. Tell your mum she can loook forward to a great journey with another addition! You will really enjoy it too WIles! Get excited!

      • My dear mum has some pretty vulnerable emotions right now. I shared your words with her and they made her tear in what I’ve come to assume is a good way. She can’t wait to meet this little person and share a similar life filled with ups and downs…ah, the excitement! I’m just worried because now everything seems ready and apparently there is still plenty of time left until the baby arrives. What will she do with herself now that everything is ready? Goodness…
        Lots of love,
        Wiles

        Wiles,
as everything is ready there are no worries and it is the waiting game. To make that more pleasant there are things to do, life to enjoy like,. Here is little list for your mum: : go out for nice meals or walks with you and your dad. Enjoy the peaceful time while still alone reading a great book, go for long walks with you, Wiles; have endulging long baths with wonderful scents, bake a cake, write a poem, do what you really wanted to do, but never had time ( I don’t know your mum’s passion), go windowshopping , visit friends, have long chats, cuddle up to Wiles as often as possible, oh I can go on. 🙂 She needs to enjoy the freeedom she has as life will be different when baby is here. It will be busy but also wonderful and rewarding. Until then, she needs to reward herself and enjoy this time feeling the baby kicking, listen to music, which the baby will hear too….
I hope this will help a bit… from a mum to a soon to be mum.

      • Wow. Dear friend, you’ve outdone yourself here! Thank you! Many of these things are passions for my beloved mom, and your thoughts are so greatly appreciated. She’s been getting regular massages, manicures and pedicures throughout pregnancy for these same reasons you mentioned. She has lots of passions (reading and spending time with friends are indeed among them), so she’s on board with everything you suggested. By the way, the baby has been hiccupping (or what the doctor calls practice breathing) pretty regularly lately…dad got to experience it recently, and I sat back and enjoyed the moment as the observer I am. It was beautiful.
Lots of love and thank you for your thoughtfulness!!!
        Wiles

Wyles! Had my stomach up in my throat there, dear dog. I am so relieved you, your Mom and the baby are okay. Scary when you feel that sensation of not having the car under control, especially with snow and/or ice…. I am proud of y’all getting through it and living to write about it. Love HuntMode

    • I’m sorry dear Huntie. I didn’t mean to startle you! I too am relieved we survived to tell tale. Especially when I think about how clueless that poor little person was in that situation….in every situation actually. Wow. There’s a thought.
      Lots of love,
      Wyles

  5. That was my first thought too, your forever mom and the little person… what a scary adventure. But to think about your people first, that must be true love, Wiley.

  6. Whew! Thank goodness that story had a happy ending. That must’ve been scary for both of you. The baby was just cruising along none the wiser. Lucky little guy. Stay safe, buddy.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

    • Dear Cupcake,
I didn’t even think of that – how the baby was completely clueless about what was happening! And that’s not all the baby is clueless about. I have so much work to do when that little person arrives! 🙂
      Lots of love,
      Wiles

  7. Glad you are all okay! Last year I got stuck in some snow on a big hill and had to turn around with the help of some others who came along just in time. It was pretty scary for me and my kids! I know the feeling.

  8. Gee Whizikas that sounds like it must have been a fairly close call for everyone. Glad to hear you are all O.K.

  9. Hi there Wiley, I’m feeling very cheery and chirpy tonight and I just wanted to let you know that I’ve nominated you for a Blog of the Year 2013 Award. My post will be published this evening at around 6.00pm Australian Time. Congratulations to you for a creating a truly Wonderful Blog.

    • I love cheery and chirpy! And I love you! Thanks for the nomination. I really appreciate you thinking of me.
      Lots of love to you!!!!
      Wiles

      • Ahh shucks that means so much to me Wiley. If I was close by I’d truly look forward to one of your lovely slurpy puppy dog kisses. Love you and the care you show for your family very much too Wiley.

      • You’d be in luck – I love giving lovely slurpy doggie kisses!!! But alas, you are not close by so I resort instead to words – thanks again!!!
        Lots of love,
        Wiley

Wow, that’s scary. We don’t have snow out here near San Francsco so we don’t have the pretty winter scenery, but we don’t have those scary driving conditions either.
