Joy: From the Ground Up

Going For Gold February 12, 2014

I wonder what I would look like in ice skates. Or skis. Or those goofy looking goggles so many athletes are wearing these days. It’s hard not to at least put some thought into these things as my people have been watching something called the Olympics so much lately.Snowy Dreaming

Whatever they’re doing at these Olympic games sure looks tough to me. Much of it involves snow and ice. And winning medals. But I definitely don’t need a set of those goggles to see its so much more than that. These athletes are living their dreams.

For many of them, this is something they’ve dreamed of doing since before they even knew they were dreaming. Since then they’ve practiced and trained. They’ve won and lost. And they’ve fallen. Hard. I was reminded of this tonight as I watched in horror as a women’s downhill skier took a painful fall in the finals. All of that hard work and determination is worth nothing without one fundamental truth. The most important decision you can make in your quest for the gold is to get back up.

“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them,” suggested American filmmaker Walt Disney.

I’m pretty sure I would tumble right off those skates, right into a tree on those skis and let’s face it – I would look pretty ridiculous is one of those figure skating getups. But that’s the thing about going for gold. The gold itself looks different to everyone. Good health and happiness. Landing that dream job. Or, in the case of the Olympians at Sochi, a gold medal.

Yet all dreamers share something deep within that keeps them going. Courage. From the ground up, they share the courage to accept failure with grace. Because courage is the fuel for those who dream. And dreams are only as big as you make them.

  1. We watched Princess Ava Bisou’s Olympics on Facebites to boycott Sochi because of how they treat stray dogs.

    • I heard about that! My people were pretty upset about that too, but dad is a stickler about watching the games, so they made the best of it. Truly awful though, what happened to my four-legged comrades…I shudder even thinking about it.

I would look silly too, they are doing rather daring stuff in the Olympics. I do like to watch or even do myself is Ice skating, love that! Mind you haven’t done it for a while, but once you know you never forget it! Enjoy the snow, and the stary flakes coming down.

    • Ice skating seems like it would be very challenging, so I’m impressed by your skills, dear friend! I do enjoy the snow…I just wish it didn’t make my dad so crabby. He has had a pretty busy time of it this winter keeping our driveway clean. 😉

I’ve been watching the Winter Olympics and can only marvel at the skills of those competing. My one and only experience with snow was on a toboggan. I slid down a steep hill and onto a frozen river. The ice on the river wasn’t all that thick and there was a loud CRAAACK and I ended up soaked to the skin. LOL I love snow…on Christmas cards 🙂

    • Oh. My. Goodness. I hate to think of anyone hurting themselves like that! I’m so glad you’re okay! Around here when things like that happen…well, it doesn’t always end well. Thank goodness that wasn’t the case for you!
      Lots of love,

Oh, I wasn’t hurt…except for my pride, but I did feel embarrassed, wet, cold and miserable at the thought of walking two miles back to the hotel dripping water all the way. Thank God the water was only shallow and I was able to stand up and walk out – sploosh, sploosh, sploosh 🙂

      • Thank goodness you weren’t hurt! I breathed a big ole sigh of relief when I saw this. 🙂

  4. I’m pretty sure you’d look handsome even in a pair of lime green goggles, W. And I’d about kill for a skating skirt. I love your paw-up, cold-foot picture. Sometimes when I try that, Mom carries me. Sometimes she says, “Toughen up. We’re almost home.” It’s always worth a try, though.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

    • How great would we be in figure skating together? I could wear a little doggie suit and you would wear your skating skirt! 🙂 I too am a master of the cold feet game…though I’m apparently getting a little chubby for such things according to my mom. 😉
      Lots of love,
      Wiles
